Lawn care and maintenance for Adelaide’s climate

Lawn care is governed by the weather in Adelaide. The Mediterranean climate gives rise to chilly, single-figure overnight lows in winter, before turning on the burners over summer, with the dry, penetrating sun so often raising the mercury above the 40°C mark.

Here is a simple care guide for all lawn varieties in Adelaide.

Buffalo Lawn Care Advice for Adelaide Climate

Mowing

In Adelaide, for maintenance, mow your Buffalo lawn to between 2cm and 5cm in the sun or light shade, or between 5cm and 7cm in heavier shade.

Mow your Buffalo turf every 5-10 days in warmer months, and every 3-6 weeks in colder months

Fertilising

Buffalo lawn needs to be fed with fertiliser to remain strong and healthy.

Use a complete fertiliser in early April (Autumn) and early September (early Spring) and if you need a quick green-up use a fertiliser high in nitrogen to promote a lush green lawn.

Watering

Buffalo is drought tolerant once established – but, like all plants, needs water. Requirements will vary depending on environmental factors.

Be aware of a drying climate, especially in Adelaide, and water your Buffalo lawn accordingly.

Remember, infrequent deep watering of your Buffalo lawn promotes a healthy lawn and a strong deep-rooted system. Watering time is best in the early morning.

Laying

In Adelaide, Buffalo grass can be installed at any time but note that during winter it will take longer to establish due to the cooler soil.
